Ubuntu for Android: The big leap!

Ubuntu and Android have finally joined hands for the sake of humanity!
Ubuntu, the most popular free OS for PCs' and Android, the most loved mobile OS, have come together to bring you the functionality and charm of both, on the same device.

Recently, Canonical ltd. announced an upcoming free and open source variant of Ubuntu designed to run on Android phones. Ubuntu for Android  was showcased at the Mobile World Congress this year and is expected to come pre-loaded with some phones in the near future.

The basic concept/idea behind Ubuntu for Android is that your phone becomes a mobile PC, wherein you can switch from Android to Ubuntu full desktop mode when you dock your device to a bigger display along with a keyboard and mouse.

FEATURES OF UBUNTU FOR ANDROID:-

1) As both Android and Linux share the same kernel i.e. is Linux, both of them run at the same time on the device. Hence, there is no need to reboot.

2) Once the device is connected to the desktop monitor, you'll see a standard Ubuntu desktop interface.

3) You'll be able to run the standard Ubuntu desktop application like Libreoffice, Firefox, Thunderbird etc.

4) You'll also have the freedom to run Android applications on Ubuntu desktop.

5) One standout feature of Ubuntu for Android is that you can make and receive calls and SMSs directly from the desktop.

6) When you'll connect your device to a TV, a full fledged Ubuntu TV experience is what you'll get!

Ubuntu for Android will run on high end Android devices, hence the hardware requirements play a key role. It requires a core based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread or any subsequent version.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:-

1) Minimum 512MB RAM.
2) Storage: 2GB for OS disk image
